Alabama's Secretary of State Announces New Initiatives

Enhancing Voter Registration and Modernizing Elections

Alabama's Secretary of State, John Merrill, announced a series of new initiatives aimed at enhancing voter registration and modernizing elections in the state. These initiatives include expanding online voter registration, implementing a statewide voter education campaign, and upgrading voting technology.

Merrill stated, "Alabama is committed to ensuring that every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate in our elections. These initiatives will make it easier for our citizens to register to vote and cast their ballots, while also ensuring the integrity and security of our elections."

Online Voter Registration Expansion

The Secretary of State's office is partnering with the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) to implement an online voter registration system. This system will allow Alabama citizens to easily and securely register to vote online from the comfort of their own homes.

Online voter registration is expected to be available in Alabama by the end of 2023. Once implemented, it will provide a convenient and accessible option for citizens to register to vote.

Statewide Voter Education Campaign

In addition to expanding online voter registration, Merrill announced a statewide voter education campaign. The campaign aims to increase voter awareness and participation, particularly among young voters and voters from marginalized communities.

The campaign will utilize a variety of outreach methods, including social media, public service announcements, and community events. It will focus on educating voters about the importance of voting, the registration process, and the upcoming elections.

Upgrading Voting Technology

The Secretary of State's office is also working to upgrade voting technology in Alabama. This includes replacing aging voting machines and implementing new technologies to improve the efficiency and security of the voting process.

The new voting machines will be equipped with the latest security features to prevent fraud and ensure the integrity of elections. They will also be more accessible for voters with disabilities.
