Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews was forced to leave Game 4 of their Eastern Conference Second Round series against the Boston Bruins early in the third period due to an apparent injury.

Matthews, who had been playing on a nagging injury, went down awkwardly after a collision along the boards. He skated off the ice under his own power but did not return to the game.

The Maple Leafs later announced that Matthews would not return to the game. No further information about his injury was immediately available.

Matthews' absence is a major blow to the Maple Leafs, who are already trailing the Bruins 3-1 in the series. The 25-year-old is Toronto's leading scorer with 60 goals and 46 assists this season.

The Maple Leafs will now look to Game 5 on Thursday night in Toronto for a chance to tie the series. Matthews' status for that game is currently unknown.
